–Jarl Haakon to King Canute | ||
Estrid Haakon (Old Norse: Håkon Eiriksdóttir) is the current ruler of Kattegat. She is a great warrior and tolerant leader.
Biography
Early Life
Jarl Haakon's grandmother came from a great African family. Her grandfather met her and fell in love with her in Alexandria, and brought her to Kattegat. Their child was Jarl Haakon's father, who became an even greater warrior. Now she is the ruler of Kattegat. Her husband was trading in Trömsa when his ship was stopped by Christians. When he refused to convert, they tortured him. When he and his men still refused to convert, the Christians killed them all.
Season 1
Jarl Haakon comes upon Freydis Eriksdotter in the forest outside Kattegat. She warns Freydis that the area is not friendly to pagans, only inside Kattegat. Upon learning who she is, Jarl Haakon tells Freydis to tell her father that she remembers him as they were friends.
Haakon is shot with multiple arrows by Kåre's warriors. Her shield-maidens and Freydis carry her back to the Great Hall where she dies.
Personality
Jarl Haakon is widely known as being a tough but fair ruler. She strives to keep her constantly growing and changing city together. She is a pagan, but allows peaceful Christians and those of other faiths to live in Kattegat. She is wise and supportive of the women around her.
In History
While Estrid Haakon clearly doesn't resemble any particular historical figure or character in the sagas, it could be argued that she is based on a combination of the historical Jarl Eiríkr Hákonarson and his sons. Eiríkr Hákonarson was a vassal ruler of King Canute, Earl of Lade, and governor of Norway. While Estrid is presented as of African descent, no such figures appear in the sagas or historical records.
Trivia
- Jarl Haakon is said to be the descendant of the jarls of Lade, a Trondheim clan.
- The double "a" in "Haakon" is pronounced like the "ou" in "ought."
