Changes: First Battle for the Kingdom of Kattegat

The First Battle for the Kingdom of Kattegat is the first important military event in the Kattegat Civil War. The battles centered around Kattegat and arose from the split of the sons of Ragnar after the death of Sigurd. It was brother fighting brother for the right to rule. On one side was Ivar, Hvitserk, and King Harald. On the other side was Lagertha, Bjorn, Ubbe, Halfdan, and their allies. The battle ended in a bitter and severe defeat for Ivar, Harald, and their forces. Although it was not the end of the Kattegat Civil War.

Battle

Hoping to avoid fighting, the two sides agreed to attempt a negotiation of peace. They exchanged hostages, with Hvitserk being traded with Halfdan. The leaders agreed to meet the next day. Unfortunately, diplomacy failed and the battle would occur.

At the start of the battle, Ivar believes that Bjorn would try an outflanking maneuver, so he tells Harald that he wants to take a third of their army to protect the ships. Hvitserk is ordered to lead a handful of warriors to the forest to try and outflank Lagertha's warriors. Harald would command the main force of their army.

Lagertha and Bjorn decide to split their army to a great extent. Lagertha's allies, the Sami, would be in the forest to serve as outflank defense. Lagertha would command the shield-maidens to flank their enemy. Bjorn would command the vanguard. The vanguard would be split into three sections. Ubbe would take control of the front line, Halfdan would control the second section, and Bjorn would lead the final assault.

Bjorn begins the battle by shouting, "In the name of Odin, in the name of my father, attack!" Harald orders his army to advance at speed. Hvitserk's group is ambushed in the forest by the Sami, and Hvitserk had to quickly pull back. Ivar stops his warriors on their way to reinforce the ships, deciding to instead watch the battle.

Shock charges begin in waves by both sides. At the climax of the battle, Lagertha orders the fatal blow and hits Harald's army from behind. Then Bjorn leads his warriors in a final assault. Harald tries to call for Ivar to come and help, but Ivar does not come to his aid. Harald is forced to retreat and suffers a humiliating defeat.

Aftermath

The battle is a clear and strong victory for Lagertha and Bjorn's forces. Ivar and Harald are forced to come up with a new place in hopes of winning the next battle. Hvitserk reveals to Ivar and Harald that Rollo had promised Hvitserk that if should ever the need for his help arise, Hvitserk would just have to ask. Ivar immediately sends a messenger to Rollo asking for soldiers to support their cause.
