Lord Harekr is the lord and ruler of Jómsborg, a highly pagan Viking community in Pomerania.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Lord Harkr's brother, Torvil Magnusson, was married to Lady Gudrid, and they had a child named Jorundr. Harkr's brother was killed in a raid. Harekr has raised Jorundr as if were his own son, and they are very close.
Season 2[]
Lord Harkr and Gudrid welcome Freydís Eiríksdóttir to Jómsborg. Harkr urges Freydís to become Gudija of the temple in Jómsborg.
When Freydís attempts to integrate the Jomsvikings and refugees, Harekr's true motives are revealed. He tells Jorundr that he doesn't want the pagan refugees integrating with the Jomsvikings but working for them instead. He views them as a "filthy mix of Norse tribes" while they are "the superior people." He then orders the massacre of all the refugees and imprisons Freydís in the temple. After she gives birth to her son, Harekr steals the child from her and tells Jorundr to kill Freydís.
Personality[]
Lord Harekr is a great warrior. As the ruler of Jómsborg, Harekr has very, very specific rules that he lives by. The Jomsvikings are very loyal. They are willing to fight to the death, even when they don't always think that their leader is right. Harekr is not who he appears to be. He is actually biased and prejudiced. He believes the Jomsvikings are superior to other Norse and Vikings. Harekr uses this supposed inferiority as the justification for reducing the refugees to thralldom. He exploits the refugees that have been rescued by his followers by subjecting them to forced labor and making them live in the forest in tents.
In History[]
Harekr is based on the historical figure Hårek of Tjøtta, a Norwegian farmer and local chieftain. He resided at Tjøtta in Nordland, or northern Norway, and had significant influence in the district of Hålogaland. He participated in the Battle of Stiklestad in 1030 CE where his peasant army defeated Olaf Haraldsson. Six years later when visiting King Magnus Olavsson I, son of Olaf Haraldsson, in Trondheim, he was killed by axe in 1036 CE by a rival chieftain.
