Bishop Heahmund's Army is an elite troop consisting of several hundred well-trained men, carrying a typical shield decorated with a red cross, prefiguring the Templar Knights. They met the Great Heathen Army at the Battle of Yorktown but were pushed back, taking several casualties.

It seems that the recruits of the army came from all the Saxon kingdoms, although the army is pledged to Bishop Heahmund and to King Aethelwulf. The two Saxon Earldoms may have provided parts of the forces.
