The House of Wessex, also known as the House of Cerdic is the ruling house of the Kingdom of Wessex. It's the oldest, and one of the most powerful, in England. It was founded three hundred years before the events of Vikings. Members are called Cerdicingas in Old English.

Description[]

When Ragnar Lothbrok arrives in Wessex, the ruler is King Ecbert, or Ecgberht Ealhmunding. King Ecbert ruled until the death of Ragnar brought the invading Great Heathen Army to England. Ecbert passed the throne to his son Æthelwulf Ecberting. After his untimely death, Alfred became King of Wessex.

In History[]

The House of Wessex was founded by Cerdic of Wessex in 519 AD. The decedents of Cerdic ruled until the unification of the Kingdoms of England by Alfred the Great. Alfred's successors would continue ruling in the main line all the way until Æthelred the Unready. The House of Wessex would briefly regain power until the deposition of Edgar Ætheling sometime after 1125 AD. Nevertheless, all kings of England Great Britain since King Henry II are descended from the House of Wessex through King Henry I's wife, Matilda of Scotland.
