Idun, also known as Iðunn, is the goddess of youth, immortality, and spring in Norse mythology. She is the wife of the god Bragi.
Biography[]
Idun is the keeper of the magical apples of immortality, which the gods must eat to preserve their youth. Her father is the god Ivald, and she is the sister of the goddess Nanna. She lives in the Grove of Brunnaker.
Description[]
Idun is symbolized by an apple and long golden hair. Her animal is the eagle. Colors associated with her are yellow, apple red, and apple green. Offerings to Idun should be apples or nuts. The time to honor Idun is Samhain, for health issues, and Mondays.
In Vikings[]
Idun visits Hvitserk while he is sitting outside Bjorn's tomb and lamenting his life and lack of a legacy. She offers to spend the night with him if he so desires. While at her house, Hvitserk partakes of the apple mead she makes for him before asking if she is really the goddess Idun and if Odin himself sent her. She replies that she is there of her own making, for she has watched Hvitserk all his life and he deserves her kindness. They spend the night together as promised, but Hvitserk is dismayed to find her gone the following morning.
