Bo Johan Renck (born December 5, 1966) is a Swedish director and former singer-songwriter under the name Stakka Bo. He is a director on Vikings. He directed the first three episodes and made multiple stylistic choices for the show. However, after his departure, many of his choices were revoked. 

Biography[]

Renck's father is a medical doctor and professor, and his mother is a nurse. His father taught at universities around the world, so he has lived in Miami, Sweden, Norway, and Kuwait. He graduated from Stockholm School of Economics with a degree in business.

Renck is a highly respected and sought after director of commercials and music videos. The French magazine CB news dubbed him "the number one director of commercials and music videos in the world."

He was originally a singer-songwriter from 1991 until 2001, using the moniker Stakka Bo. His biggest hit is Here We Go.

His first film, Downloading Nancy, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 21, 2008. This led to directing three episodes of Breaking Bad, which led to working on The Walking Dead, Halt and Catch Fire, and Bates Motel. He also directed the miniseries Chernobyl.

He works within a variety of different media, including films, commercials, music videos, theatre productions, art and music projects, and still photography. He is based in Stockholm where he runs RAF.

  • Renck runs his own production company with his childhood friend Jonas Åkerlund, called R.A.F, or Renck Åkerlund Films.
  • He prefers mini-series or series where each episode is a separate "entity" like Black Mirror, so that he can have more control and input.
