Mercia (Old English: Miercna rīċe) is one of the kingdoms of Anglo-Saxon England. The kingdom is centered on the valley of the River Trent in the region now known as the English Midlands.
In Vikings[]
Mercia was previously considered to be the strongest of the English kingdoms. However, Mercia has been gradually weakening, while the Kingdom of Wessex is rising in power.
The series depicts the Mercian Civil War, in which succession of the throne following the reign of King Offa is disputed. His brother, Brihtwulf, is ruling as king, but his niece, Kwenthrith, is trying to depose him. She comes to Wessex seeking aid.
The king of Wessex, King Ecbert, appears to offer his support. However, he ends up taking over the kingdom himself, making him and his decedents the king of Wessex and Mercia.
