Svase was a Sami king and an ally to Lagertha.
King Svase has allied with Lagertha against Ivar and Harald. He arrives in Kattegat with his his daughter Snæfrid and warriors. In Kattegat he meets Bjorn who proposes to marry his daughter. King Svase accepts.
Svase and his allies discuss how to respond to Ivar's attack, and decide to meet him in battle on land, assuming that he will not attack the town from the sea.
During the First Battle for the Kingdom of Kattegat, the Sami successfully ambush Hvitserk's division, driving them back and allowing Lagertha to outflank Harald's main force and forcing them to retreat with heavy losses.
King Svase leads his forces during the Second Battle for the Kingdom of Kattegat. He attempts to repeat the succesfull ambush against a reserve of Vestfold-Rogaland forces. Unfortunately, the tide is quickly turned against the Sami. King Svase is killed. Snæfrid finds her father in a ditch dead with his face cut open by the Norsemen's axes and meets the same fate moments later.
King Svase is based on the giant called Svási who visits King Harald Finehair at Yol with his daughters. When Harald becomes so overcome with lust at the sight of Snæfrid he wants to sleep with her, Svási refuses to allow his daughter to be a concubine so the two were married.
- Ethnic Sami are referred to a Finns in the Norse sagas. They are traditionally nomads in the mountainous and forested interior of upper Scandinavia who herd reindeer.
