Jarl Thorkell (Old Norse: Þorke(ti)ll inn hávi), also known as Thorkell "the Tall," is a Viking jarl from Norway.
Biography
Season 6
Jarl Thorkell arrives in Tamdrup for the moot to elect a king of all Norway. He does not approve of limiting his power or of making Bjorn King of Norway. At the moot he casts his cote in favor of King Harald. Despite this, Harald mistrusts Thorkell. He explains that Thorkell had betrayed his entire family to reach his position. Harald anticipates that Thorkell will turn against him eventually and is prepared to make a show of force on him.
During the Battle for Vestfold, Thorkell answers Harald's summons. He is killed during the battle.
In History
Jarl Thorkell seems to be based on the historical figure Thorkell the Tall, also known as Thorkell the High. He was the chief commander of the Jomsvikings, an elite order of Viking mercenaries and conquerors in the 10th and 11th centuries.
Trivia
- The series uses the Icelandic pronunciation of his name, where the double "l" is pronounced "tl."
